Do not make the same mistake I did. Pilates is not what I pictured, an activity on mats, rolling around, and wearing funny socks.
Equipment Pilates at Omni is a structured physical fitness approach based on science, anatomy, and muscle physiology. Born of the need to improve poor health, with a focus on our core muscles ("the powerhouse"), it combines strengthening, balance, proprioception, stretching, and muscle memory. Every movement involves a minimum of three muscle groups and uses various equipment to provide graduated resistance with low impact.
Four years ago I started down a tough road of bilateral ankle reconstruction operations and am currently recovering from the sixth surgery. Prior to this I had been very active, going to the gym at least once a day. I usually combined aggressive cardio with weight lifting, isolating some individual muscles, rotating every two to three days--pretty standard/traditional.
Now fast forward to the second operation: I was miserable, gaining weight, struggling on crutches and a knee scooter that made my backache worse, and doing a pretty good job of making everyone around me miserable as well. My wife (bless her heart) talked me into a trial session with Omni Pilates. I was skeptical, worried that it would be a waste of time and wondering what they could possibly do for me. I was in a cast and could no put weight on my leg.
One session and I was hooked. The first thing I realized was how much time, energy, and pain I wasted with my old-fashioned workout. Within two weeks I was stronger, my back pain gone, and I was in a massively better mood. Even after four more surgeries, my strength continues to increase. I have healthier balance and am much more limber and flexible--probably more so than I have been in ten to fifteen years. My gained weight has come off and stayed off. No longer am I stiff in the morning, and my posture is dramatically improved.
Any exercise is better than none, but if you want the best, most efficient exercise, with the longest lasting effect, tailored to your personal capability and goals, then you need Omni Pilates.
I promise, it is just what the doctor should order!
