Following her career as a dancer with the Bermuda Ballet,[6] and principal dancer with the City Ballet of Toronto and the Atlantic Ballet Company,[7] Moira Merrithew learned, with the help of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre,[8] of the Pilates method of exercise. Moira received her Pilates training in New York City from Romana Kryzanowska, a protégé of Joseph Pilates. After her training was complete and her return to Toronto, Moira and Lindsay Merrithew developed the Stott Pilates method in the 1980s. Lindsay has been instrumental in designing, producing and marketing the company's extensive equipment and video lines and is a past member of Ontario's prestigious Innovators Alliance for elite entrepreneurs. Lindsay was nominated twice for Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year award and is a five-time recipient of PROFIT Magazine's 100 Fastest-Growing Companies award.

Breathing is one of the most basic of all physiological functions in the body. From the moment of conception, unconsciously, our body begins to breathe and continues to do so until the very last breath of life. Yet, we pay little attention unless guided to do so by a movement therapist or trainer. Rarely are we given a formal education on optimal breathing and the benefits as children or as adults.
Breathing is the primary focus in stress reduction, pain relief, martial arts, yoga, meditation and many more mind-body disciplines. The research reveals that breath is a powerful tool and assists in keeping the mind focused, centered and calm and that creating awareness of the breath and maintaining a simple daily practice of meditation or mindful breathing will enhance overall health and well-being. Some of these benefits are immediate, such as feelings of relaxation and peace, others, such as the ability to respond to stress more effectively, can be seen over time with longer practice of breathing exercises. Mindful breathing helps regulate the eleven operating systems of the body i.e. the nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine, digestive, lymphatic, integumentary, muscular, reproductive, skeletal, respiratory, and urinary Research has shown that optimal breathing exercises can have immediate effects by altering the pH level of the blood, or changing blood pressure Mindful breathing creates awareness and enhances mindfulness by making conscious an everyday action that is primarily done unconsciously. We are so thankful for your patronage, it is because of you that we continue to grow J Q: Everyone is talking about how “sitting is the new smoking” and it has made me think about the Pilates programming I do with my clients. Many of them sit at desks all day, so I've been incorporating a lot more spinal extension as well as Matwork and equipment-based exercise than I was originally taught in the traditional series.
It seems to make clients more aware of their posture and stronger in their mid and upper-back areas – do you think this particular emphasis can be harmful in the long run? A: The goal of any Pilates program is to rebalance the muscles around each joint and restore the body to an optimal level of postural stability and functional mobility. Many of us create less than ideal postures or movement patterns based on our habits or daily activities. STOTT PILATES® students are taught to look at both dynamic and static postures to determine the best programming options for each individual to help these imbalances or dysfunctions. If a client spends a large part of the day hunched over a computer with the thoracic spine flexed, the head protracted forward and the shoulders rounded, this could become a habitual posture that follows them around through life. A carefully designed Pilates program can help bring greater awareness to their posture, strengthen muscles that may have become lengthened and weak and lengthen those that may have become tight. As long as the program focuses energy on all sides of the joints – including the spine – the body will begin to move more efficiently. Remember that BALANCE is the key. We would like to welcome Yogi's Stephanie Diaz, Lori Sunderman, and Megan Vercellino. Also new to the team, Massage Therapist, Delia Geherett and Hypnotherapist Carol Hillger.
